Getting your product on the shelf is the start. Winning at retail means smart trade marketing and visibility that earns the impulse purchase.

In Kenya's crowded retail landscape — supermarkets, dukas, kiosks, market stalls — the shelf is where most purchase decisions actually happen. Trade marketing is the discipline of winning that shelf.

What trade marketing actually covers

It's three things: (1) visibility — where you sit on the shelf and how you look; (2) relationships — with stockists, shopkeepers, distributors; (3) activations — what gets buyers to pick yours over the alternative right next to it.

Win the eye-line

Eye-level shelf placement converts 2-3x better than top or bottom shelves. Negotiate for it. Pay for it if you have to. Visible products are bought products.

Branded merchandising matters

Branded fridges. Shelf-talkers. Wobblers. Header cards. Floor stickers. They're cheap, they work, and most Kenyan SMEs skip them. A simple branded shelf strip can lift sales by 15-30% in a duka.

Train the shopkeeper

The duka owner or supermarket attendant is your sales rep. Make sure they know your product, can recommend it, and have the answers to common buyer questions. A 10-minute training visit pays for itself.

In-store activations

Sampling. Demonstrations. Promo girls. Discount weekends. Each works for different categories. FMCG that needs to be tasted: sampling. Tech that needs to be shown: demos. Anything price-sensitive: discount weekends.

Measure shelf velocity

Not just "did we sell?" — "how fast did we sell relative to the competitor next to us?" That's the metric that wins reorders.

Most marketing budgets go to chasing new buyers. Trade marketing focuses on converting the buyers already in the store. That's usually cheaper.
