The Power of Digital Campaigns: Lessons from a Decade in Brand & Performance
Tumeiva's founder has spent 10+ years across FMCG, finance and creative agencies, running digital campaigns of every shape. These are the lessons that actually move the needle.
Digital marketing in Kenya is full of advice. Some of it is useful. Most of it is recycled American thinking that doesn't survive contact with the M-Pesa-powered, mobile-first, price-sensitive Kenyan reality. Here's what a decade of running campaigns across categories actually taught the founder.
1. Audience beats creative — always
The best ad in the world shown to the wrong people is a waste. The worst ad shown to the right people still works. Spend on understanding who actually buys, when, and why, before you spend a shilling on creative.
2. Mobile-first is not optional
Most Kenyans see your ad on a vertical phone screen, on a 4G connection that's sometimes 3G, while doing something else. Design for that. Square or vertical creative. Big text. Hook in the first 2 seconds. M-Pesa-ready landing pages.
3. WhatsApp is the dark social funnel
You're tracking website visits. You're tracking form fills. You're probably missing the biggest chunk of your funnel: the WhatsApp conversation that follows. Build a way to capture those conversations or you're flying blind.
4. Test small, scale brutally
Don't bet KES 200K on one creative concept. Bet KES 5K on five. Kill four. Scale the winner. The fastest way to waste a budget is committing to one idea before the market told you it works.
5. Performance and brand are not opposites
The 60/40 split (60% brand-building, 40% performance) holds in Kenya too. Performance gives you the lead today. Brand gives you the lead in two years at a third of the cost. You need both.
6. Don't trust platform "smart" defaults
Meta and Google's "broad" targeting and auto-bidding work great — for them. For your KES budget, manual targeting and clear conversion windows usually outperform once you have data.
The biggest difference between a good Kenyan marketer and a bad one isn't talent. It's the willingness to look at the numbers honestly.
A decade of running campaigns says: get the audience right, design for the phone, capture WhatsApp, test small, balance brand and performance, and never trust the defaults. That's the playbook.
