How to Choose the Right Marketing Partner for Your Business

Choosing a marketing partner is a big decision. The wrong choice wastes money and a year of momentum. The right choice multiplies both. Here's how to tell which is which.

The Kenyan marketing agency landscape ranges from genuinely excellent to genuinely terrible — and the marketing the agencies use on themselves often doesn't tell you which is which. Here's a practical framework.

What to look for

Specificity in the pitch. A good agency pitches your business, not their template. If the deck could be sent to any other client by changing the logo, it's a template.

Honest about scope. They tell you what they can and can't do. They have a clear point of view on what to prioritise and (more importantly) what to skip.

Senior involvement. Who actually runs your account after the contract is signed? If it's the people in the pitch — great. If it's "our team" you've never met — caution.

Real, verifiable case studies. Numbers should be attributable. "We grew sales by 50%" — for whom, over what period, from what baseline?

Honest reporting. Ask to see a sample monthly report. Is it leads and revenue? Or impressions and "engagement growth"? You want the former.

Red flags to walk away from

  1. Guaranteed results. Nobody can guarantee marketing outcomes. Anyone who does is selling you a story.
  2. "We work with everyone." Marketing benefits from focus. Generic agencies often deliver generic work.
  3. Inflated track record. Be skeptical of "50+ brands, 10+ years" claims from young agencies. Check the founding date. Check LinkedIn.
  4. No clear pricing. Hidden pricing or "depends on the project" with no ranges signals chaos.
  5. All vanity metrics. If their case study is "we got them 1M impressions" with no revenue link — walk.

The questions to ask

  • Who specifically will run my account?
  • What's your typical client size and budget?
  • Can I see a recent monthly report (anonymised)?
  • What's your turnover rate? Can I speak to a current client?
  • How do you handle disagreements about strategy?
  • What happens if it's not working at the 90-day mark?
The best marketing partners ask more questions than you do. If they don't — they're selling a product, not a partnership.

Choose carefully. The agency you pick will shape your business for the next year. Get it right.
